Prominent Sudanese politician Yasir Arman said the difference from earlier this week is clear: a US visa was blocked in New York for Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and now Congress is demanding an independent international investigation by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) into the Sudanese Army’s use of chemical weapons – not against an “unknown party” but against the Army itself.
Arman added: ” The meeting took place on the eve of the annual conference of the governing Labour Party, which will be held in Liverpool. Dame Anneliese Dodds has been known for her principled positions in support of peace and democracy in Sudan in the House of Commons. She also visited Sudanese refugees in Chad last May.
The meeting addressed the situation of Sudanese students eligible to study in the UK. We discussed with her some of the solutions developed by their families and their advocacy campaign. We also discussed the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire to address the humanitarian catastrophe and protect civilians, and continued support for the Fact-Finding Mission; and the growing risk of famine and economic collapse and their impact on the lives of millions of Sudanese people amid the war.
We also called on her to continue visiting Sudanese refugees in other neighbouring countries, and emphasised the importance of moral and political support from the UK, particularly from the governing Labour Party, for the anti-war front and democratic forces in Sudan.
The meeting also discussed the return of Islamists to positions of power in Sudan and the risks this poses to domestic, regional and international stability. It addressed migration, the preservation of the Sudanese state, and the lack of legitimacy of the parties to the war and the need for regional and international support for Sudanese efforts to build a single, professional national army and to resolve the issue of the proliferation of militias.
The significance of the meeting lies in the fact that it took place on the eve of Dame Anneliese Dodds’s participation in the governing Labour Party Conference, which will address the party’s foreign policy. The meeting highlighted the importance of ensuring that the Sudanese issue receives the attention and priority it deserves.
